Why in the world do we need to know about latitude and longitude?

Hey students! Can anyone think of a real life situation where latitude and longitude would be helpful? Why is it so important for us to know how to use latitude and longitude?

It's good to know latitude and longitude because if you were a piolit and navigated a ship or plane, you wouldn't know where you going or what dierection your in without latitude and longitude

Ms. Theriot,

A real situation when latitude and longitude is helpful because we can plot hurricans. For example, hurricane Fay is moving towards us. If I knew the coordinates (latitude and longitude) I could track where the storm goes.

Maria! What a brilliant idea! Nice thoughts. You are exactly right, longitude and latitude are very useful when plotting and tracking hurricanes. Good work!

We need to know about latitude and longitude because the meteorologist would not be able to tell or predict to us what size any kind of storm would be so people would know to go so other place for their saftey.
